Gregory Johnston at Stephen Haller Gallery in New York February 24- April 2, 2011. One of my favorite places in Chelsea on 26st. I very much enjoyed this show, this piece 'Armonia No 100 ' was a favorite. I am typically attracted to work that seems to show a restraint in color but really does not at all - which is very much evident in Johnston's work. Beautifully layered work that reveals more and more as you experience it. While your there be sure and visit the smaller backroom where a few of their stable is always exhibited, such as Johnnie Winona Ross.
You might head over to Gogosian afterwards for some mind numbing enormity and Rudolf Stengel.

Academy of Art University Spring show, I'm on the right. I am very happy to be included, considering the number of entries. I feel very proud and at the same time humbled to be included in such an exceptional group of artists. I certainly can't complain about the placement that is for sure. This was shot through the front window. It was an interesting group show opening, that was well attended. It is up until the 11th. It can be hard to gauge your work in a group show, I think you just have to hope that certain people will 'find it' so to speak, and spend some time with your piece.

I've been reading Peter Plagans' artist statement where he talks about basically wanting to make 'good looking paintings' free from 'thinly disguised symbolism lurking in their abstractness'

It's kind of interesting in that he talks also about artists who are sacrificing making art that is 'good looking' per say, by seeking to make just a statement of some sort. Seems like there is a lot of art like that around today and possibly it leaves the majority of it's audience feeling left out. Maybe the best art does both, making a visual statement that does not leave the viewer behind.

I also recently watched a few interviews with Wayne Theibaud. I really like his humble way and his work ethic. He exhibits a general surprise at the state of a world in which his own work would sell for as much as it does.
He states that he has not the slightest idea of what art is, in a way he is saying I just do my thing and try to do it well. "To be a painter is something have to prove"

I remember seeing one of his cake paintings years ago. It was good, at the time I did not understand why, or better said, why paint dessert? Why not, if you can do it like that.

Nude?

The 'Birthday Suit' show really has me thinking. The consideration of the figure, it's impact, and returning to it creating a series of figures in this style-which really is one that is comfortable for me. Interesting about the nude, why do it? Why, as artist do we continually return to it or better yet, why is the viewer continually drawn to it. I was thinking about this and came to the realization that it is pretty much the first thing we do at art school. Of course we are instructed through the figure in the study of form, balance and structure. For me, I'm definitely connected to memories as pathways to objective thinking in my art. So in some ways in my mind, thinking of the figure I am frequently returning to the studio class with instructor John Foote at SVA, in the freshman year of my formal art education. So for the artist, many of us will continue to revisit the idea of the figure or nude because as artists–we simply know to do them. There is an understanding of the importance of communicating to each other in this manner and what it can tell us about ourselves.

Removing the covers we are forced to look–at the good, bad or ugly. Making us come to face the reality of each other and ourselves seeing it's beauty. 'The nude show' I believe, was very much about this.

One week ago today I had the inspiring and engaging experience of visiting two amazing artists for the open studio tours that they had. Painter Cheryl Hotchberg and Printmaker Evan Summer

Cheryl's has a nice studio space right down the street from Kutztown University. Her work is figurative and mysterious at times. I'm very interested in her recent work which shows her bringing animals into her pictures.

Evan Summer is a master printermaker. His studio -impeccably kept, was a small refurbished building, apparently a tractor dealer showroom at some point. I was intrigued by his prints of images focusing on man made objects interacting with natural environments. In some ways they make me think of scene's sci-fi movies I've seen and otherwise remind me of places very much like them that that I have come across while mountain biking-they cause you to stop and consider because of the visual juxtapose of elements.

Keely's work-very closely connected to my work in concept....connecting with simple beauty in nature. Sculptures made from sticks and leaves... natural elements.

who's photographs were pictures of people that had the feeling of saying 'this is who we are' and were apologetically beautiful.

Bill Jensen at Chiem Reed

I attended the Bill Jensen opening at Cheim&Read [link to the show] last Thursday in NY. As you can see it was quite an 'event'. I guess it was a see and be seen art event. It was packed in all three rooms, making it somewhat difficult to spend real time with the work. One thing is for sure though, it was the place to be on a Thursday evening, which in a lot ways I find to be very good thing. There were other openings that evening and people seemed to be enjoying the whole atmosphere inside and out of the galleries.

In the first room were the ink and charcoal work that was framed. I admired that work and the other work on paper in the back gallery which was also smaller and framed. To me that is where his use of texture and paint movement really achieved a certain reaction between paper and medium that I'm not sure was as evident on the canvases. That said the canvases where impressive also. Simple thin framed as they were, they were vibrant and bold statements.

Long Break?

Not really. Before the beginning of the new semester I am busy building panels and preparing for the work to come. Centrally, more than just physically preparing, one needs to mentally prepare and considering strategies for the creative dialogue that will follow. I find myself needing time to process what I've done and what how I'm moving forward from that. Which after a while builds the anticipation of just the act getting back to work. But, the work of getting prepared, building panels, choosing canvases, preparing surfaces can not be underestimated.

Building panels....measure, cut, clamp, glue, sand, prepare surface....repeat.

Two panels in process. I'm planning on building a second panel to add horizontal length to the one on the right. They are now both 42x48. Time for a bigger studio....!

This piece is on that I struggled with and has many layers of past finishes. It just never felt right until I abandoned the red for lighter whites and yellows. Or I saw the red as the underpainting which is what finally worked.

Coates is an international conceptual artist poised in the gap between painting and sculpture. Exploring the nature of unconventional materials is a signature part of his work. He is able to balance an abstract modernist painting sensibility with a gritty found object sculptural inclination. Coates is able to spin mundane rubber tubes, feathers and discarded materials into fine works of art that astonishingly transcend the materials themselves. There is an excitement and tension in the brave use of materials that is resolved by a mastery of craftsmanship. The result is often large-scale contemplative installations that envelop the viewer. Dada: Influence and Response presents new rubber and feather works that explore a contemporary conversation with the anti-art movement of World War I. Dadaism was anarchistic in nature and rejected the prevailing standards in art, commenting on the meaninglessness of the modern world. Coates’ art continues this spirit of Dada, utilizing collage, assemblage and readymade objects without rules or limitations.

Coates was awarded the Joan Mitchell, Pollock-Krasner and Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship Grants and the New York State Foundation Grant. His work is shown internationally, most recently at Galerie Denkraum in Vienna. In 2002, at the occasion of receiving the Edward Mitchell Bannister award in Rhode Island, Coates’ friend and award presenter Professor Bob Dillworth wrote: “Insisting on the material nature of art, on the interchangeability of things in the world, and malleability of meaning, Gregory Coates has broadened the scope of his own reality to put process and risk-taking at center-stage. This amounts to a kind of visual radicalism rarely seen today.”

Conrad Marca-Relli

1950's New York School Abstract Expressionist artist—Not as well known as his contemporaries [Rothko, Kline, de Kooning, Pollack among others] but certainly respected. "has played a pivotal role in twentieth century painting and sculpture, and is the most succinct and direct single clue the the aesthetic of genuinely modern art" -Clement Greenburg

I think that if you have an interest in the Cubism of Braque, Picasso or the work of Juan Gris, Relli seems like a continuation in many ways of where the cubist left off; but an expansion of certain meanings in relationships between figuration and abstraction in terms of form and process. I'm really interested in his ideas about large canvas mixed media works along with his technique of constructivist application. He was at the forefront of the idea of collage as a contemporary to monumental painting. Building up the pieces, working in layers, forcing outcomes and essentially investing in what could happen.

Vassily Kandinsky show at the Guggenheim

This was a well curated and inspiring exhibition. It spanned his whole career. Seeing work from the Blaue Reider days up and into the 1940's going from floor to floor-spiraling upward as you experience the man's entire career was really something. The place was packed with I normally disdain, but somehow with his work it did not seem so.
He was so unafraid to experiment. The audacity to create, the sheer nerve to experiment, moving boldly in his approach. Brave with both color and content. You could just feel a sense of adventure and spirituality toward art. Taking art as an idea so seriously but then exhibiting fun-a sense of play and experimentation for it's own sake. I was overwhelmed by the sheer audacity of it all. A celebration of art, clearly for it's own sake.

I am coming to realize the physical and tactile nature of mark making on paper is important for me as an artist. I am drawn to paper again and again. There is a sensitivity to it that is like no other surface. It is alive, it is physical, it's origins speak to me. Gentle at times, fragile, it reveals it's beauty. Treated with a rough hand, it shows its depth much like the bark of tree.

I read recently that 95% of blogs have not been updated in 4 months. Well, I guess the honeymoon is over.
It's been a busy time with 3 classes starting and teaching 1. The first few weeks are always hectic.
So, lots is happening and new work will be posted soon. I'm trying to concentrate on finished pieces. The Neuweiller series was really about experimentation. Now its time to get the finishes in order and complete it as a group of work. I'm also working hard on the focusing of my thesis and centralizing ideas into cohesive group of work. Look for large mixed media paintings soon.

All around there are good things happening.
See you Thursday afternoon at 4:30 for the opening of Lee Leckey's solo exhibition at Cedar Crest college's Cressman Gallery. I do believe she will also be doing a demonstration of her encaustic technique. I'm already a fan of her work and recently speaking with her she has told me of new directions and ideas for this show. The Dark Show

I had a nice trip to Philadelphia and met some great people over the weekend for the opening of The Dark Show at StrataSphere.
[StrataSphere is an art exhibition space at Germantown Avenue and Berks Street in the Old Kensington section of Philadelphia]
Pam Farrell, Michelle Marcuse, and Rob Solomon address the subject of 'dark' in through numerous perspectives in this show. Overall the show comes together in it's themes of darkness, tranparency/layers and ideas of emergence.

Well, there is a Summer semesters output of work. Maybe the Nuewieller series is done for now.
I have to put a finish on these a varnish I think and mount them on cradled panels and possibly sheet metal if I can figure that one out. I'd like to shop the series around for a show.
I'm talking somewhat of a break, getting away and then preparing for Fall semester. The Neuweiler Series.
These mixed media images are what I have been working on recently. They are based on a series of pictures I took while touring the Neuweiler building in Allentown. I'm very interested in old buildings for their architecture and historical perspectives revealing what they both hide and reveal. I have not posted for a while, not for lack of work-but more a delay in fully understanding how these works fit into the dialogue of my art. Some feel very finished and others still may be revisited. This is a new direction for me, I believe a coming together of numerous ideas and interests. At this point I'm just scratching the surface and exploring the possibilities. They encompass photography, image transfer and manipulation, painting and collage. I believe they do fit into this statement:
My work is based in authenticity. It is about real space and time transpiercing through historical perspectives. Memory and place represented by transparent layers that reveal elements of the past.

I'm really struggling with direction these days. Do you find direction through doing? How do know what to do? What if you thought you did have a direction and then somebody threw all that into question?
